Hunting in Bulgaria
One of the most ancient human activities is hunting. In ancient times it was a source of food, clothing and a guarantee for the development and survival of humankind. With the appearance of agriculture in its two varieties, plant-growing and livestock breeding and especially the sedentary way of life led to the disappearance of hunting as a way to survive. Hunting of game became a privilege of the wealthy men, sport and hobby. Hunting trophies decorated the castles and palaces and became an integral part of the interior of the house of kings and nobles. Possession of rich hunting collections is a matter of honor for many natural history museums around the world.
Hunting in Bulgaria became organized in the early 19th century. Thanks to the care of the game, its multiplication is under control, hunting seasons are fixed, hunting and forestry reserves, as well as state game-hunting grounds were established, where large and small game is raised, such as: deer, roe deer, wild boar, chamois, mouflon, wood-grouse, rabbits, partridges, pheasants, quails and other game species with high trophy quality. Bulgarian trophies won many prestigious international awards.
Geographical location, topography, climate, soil fertility, water and other conditions determine the existence of extremely rich and diverse fauna and flora, preserved wildlife and the amazing with its beauty and power game species. According to recent researches wild game wealth of Bulgaria is represented by over 18,000 red deer, 4200 fallow deer, 69,700 deer, 1,799 wild goats, 46 400 wild boars, over 930 bears, 2,300 wood-grouses, rabbits, partridges, pheasants and 2000 mouflons.
